Bleeding Love
“Bleeding
Love”
It had been a while for me, that i had been involved in any purely musical production, but after almost five years of co-running a successful boutique recording studio in London, i miss it. There is something extraordinary about the recording and production process in music that is beautifully pure and unadultrated.
Last year, singer songwriter Jake Walden, (I had directed, shot and edited the video of his song “For Someone”) approached me to record and produce a cover of Leona Lewis’ hit “Bleeding Love”, but with a completely different treatment, acoustic....and... a duet, with the wonderfully talented, Bonnie Somerville.
I had Jake lay down what was a very loose piano part, no click track, no percussion. Then came the vocals, Jake has a raw and rich vocal tone and the Neumann picked it up beautifully, along with the traffic of a Hollywood Street and what seemed like everything that was making a sound within three city blocks. Sometime in the early afternoon Bonnie Somerville arrived. Bonnie is a complete pro. She walked to the mic, and totally nailed it, which considering the lack of any tangible meter was no mean feat. Two takes and the second one was only a backup. Bonnie Somerville has an awesome rock voice, its big, vast in fact, but also nuanced and emotive. Its a compelling combination. I have only ever recorded one voice like it before, and curiously that voice came out of a woman with the same first name. Bonnie Tyler. I Guess there is just something about those Bonnies!
There was considerable post, all in Logic, with a final run of the master through Peak. Enjoy
Its a beautiful blend of voices, of Jake and Bonnie’s, and although i say it myself i think it brings out even more than the original what a beautiful song Jesse McCartney and Ryan Tedder wrote. You can get it here. And you can watch a lovely animation by Holly Edwards made to accompany the release here.

Somethings Gonna Live
My
friend Dan Raim completed and premiered his beautiful and moving
documentary “Somethings Gonna
Live”
at the MANN 6 during AFI Fest.
I had shot for Dan various bits and bobs for the film, and then, on one lovely, and for me memorable afternoon last year, a conversation between Haskell Wexler and Robert Boyle,
Dan has, put together a wonderful piece of work during a four year labour of love, go see it then go buy it. Its a keeper.
